HEPATITIS B IMMUNOGLOBULIN INJECTION: Babies born to carrier mothers are at greater risk of catching Hep B virus during birth. Baby can be protected from Hepatitis B by having extra injections of Hep B vaccine and Immunoglobulin (HBIG) at birth. If the recommended immunisations are completed the baby’s risk of becoming infected is reduced by about 95%.
This medicine works best if you receive it soon after being exposed to hepatitis B. If you had sexual contact with a person who has hepatitis B, you should receive this medicine within 14 days. If you were exposed some other way, you should receive this medicine within 24 hours of being exposed to hepatitis B.
Hepatitis B immunoglobulin offers effective passive protection against hepatitis B if administered prophylactically or within hours of infection. Hepatitis B vaccine is usually given with HBIG to confer long-lasting immunity, especially if the subject is at risk of re-infection. Different injection sites are used.
HBIG is recommended for post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) to hepatitis B virus (HBV) by percutaneous, mucosal, sexual, household or perinatal exposure). HBIG should be given as soon as possible, preferably within 12 hours for perinatal exposure and within 24 hours for percutaneous or mucosal exposure.
