SKIN BIOPSY PUNCH: The colour-coded skin biopsy punches are ready-to-use and are ideal for the gentle removal of tissue samples or skin lesions. Available in different diameters, the sharp stainless steel blade ensures a clean cut with minimal tissue trauma.
A skin biopsy is a procedure that removes a small sample of skin for testing. The procedure can help diagnose a skin lesion (an abnormal area of skin). The skin sample is looked at under a microscope to check for skin cancer, a variety of skin conditions, or skin infections. Only certain skin lesions need a biopsy.
Primary indications for punch biopsies include suspicious skin growths and lesions. These include melanoma, carcinomas and various bullous or inflammatory skin conditions. Punch biopsies need to be prepared for. Factors such as the psychological implication of the results and/ or procedure must be taken into account.
Punch biopsies are performed with round, disposable knives ranging in diameter from 2 to 10 mm, but 3 mm is the smallest size likely to give sufficient tissue for consistently accurate histologic diagnosis.
