Plaster of Paris Bandage is a high cast strength bandage, takes optimum setting time, which is extra durable, and with minimum powder loss.
Plaster Bandage is made from a specially woven cloth, uniformly impregnated with the finest quality, fast setting plaster. Its high strength and stability when set makes it perfect for reinforcing larger, high definition body castings such as full torso, pregnancy casts and more.
Plaster of Paris Bandage is a quick-setting gypsum plaster consisting of a fine white powder (calcium sulfate hemihydrate), which hardens when moistened and allowed to dry. Known since ancient times, plaster of paris is so called because of its preparation from the abundant gypsum found near Paris.
The use of plaster of Paris bandage: A plaster-coated fabric bandage that is applied in layers around an injured limb or part of limb to construct a stiff dressing (cast) in order to immobilize fractured bones, diseased joints, or painful sprains.
Plaster of Paris is used in postoperative immobilisation and also in the management of some amputees. Casting over stumps has allowed immediate rehabilitation using prosthesis. POP was used in the immediate management of Open fractures until the evolution of external fixator.
It is widely used pre-operatively for temporary immobilisation and stabilisation of fractures, post-operatively for protection of fixation and soft tissue resting, correcting deformities and definitive management of specific injuries.
To remove plaster of Paris bandage: It is always better to visit a hospital to get the cast removed.. If it is a POP cast, you can keep the involved limb in a bucket of water for 15 min. so that it becomes relatively soft and then remove it.. If it is a fiber cast, it needs to be cut by plaster cutting machine.
