MOTORIZED POWER WHEELCHAIR: A motorized wheelchair, powerchair, electric wheelchair or electric-powered wheelchair (EPW) is a wheelchair that is propelled by means of an electric motor (usually using differential steering) rather than manual power.
The chairs are typically equipped with four or six wheels and are powered by a motor operated by one or two batteries. Rather than relying on upper body strength to move, the user can control the wheelchair with a convenient joystick mounted on one armrest.
A standard wheelchair has 2 large back wheels and 2 small front caster wheels. The brakes are located on the large wheels at the patient’s side. The weight of a standard wheelchair varies depending on its size, and what it is made from. The average weight for a “standard” manual wheelchair is around 41-43 pounds.
