Ambulatory blood pressure monitoring diagnosis: When using ABPM, ensure that at least two measurements per hour are taken during the person’s usual waking hours (for example between 8 am and 10 pm). Use the average value of at least 14 measurements taken during the person’s usual waking hours to confirm a diagnosis of hypertension.
The general description of blood pressure: Blood pressure is the force of your blood pushing against the walls of your arteries. Each time your heart beats, it pumps blood into the arteries. Your blood pressure is highest when your heart beats, pumping the blood.
Ambulatory Blood Pressure Monitoring (ABPM) is a diagnostic test to determine the presence of hypertension by taking measurements during normal daily activities, over a span of 24 consecutive hours.
To wear an ambulatory BP monitor: A cuff is worn around your upper arm and this is connected to a small digital blood pressure monitor which may be directly attached to the cuff or to a belt around your waist. The device is small and portable so it should not affect your normal daily activities.
