A Holter monitor is a type of portable electrocardiogram (ECG). It records the electrical activity of the heart over 24 hours or longer while you are away from your healthcare provider’s office. A standard or resting ECG is one of the simplest and fastest tests used to check the heart.
A Holter monitor is a small, wearable device that records the heart’s rhythm, usually for 1 to 2 days. It’s used to spot irregular heartbeats, also called arrhythmias.
A Holter monitor test may be done if a traditional electrocardiogram (ECG or EKG) doesn’t provide enough details about the heart’s condition.

Holter Monitors: There are two main advantages of a continuous Holter monitoring system: the possibility of quantifying the real burden of an arrhythmia, and the detection of rhythm disturbances outside the limits set by an algorithm or memory. We place wires on your chest using small, painless sticky pads called electrodes. The wires plug into the monitor. The monitor clips onto pants or a belt. Or you can carry it on a shoulder strap.
The number and position of electrodes varies by model, but most Holter monitors employ between three and eight. These electrodes are connected to a small piece of equipment that is attached to the patient’s belt or hung around the neck, keeping a log of the heart’s electrical activity throughout the recording period.
The combined BP and ECG Holter also provides interactive blood pressure recording at times of certain cardiac abnormalities. This can enhance the diagnostic value of the recorded data, while increasing patient comfort and ease of use.
At night, try to sleep on your back keeping the monitor carefully positioned at your side so that the electrodes and wires stay in position on your body and remain securely attached to the recording device.
Holters can also be used to detect episodes of ischemia suggesting coronary artery blockages. They are commonly used after heart attacks as a method of identifying prognosis. Loop Recorders are similar to Holter Monitors, but meant for prolonged monitoring lasting three weeks or more.
This device is a portable battery-powered electrocardiograph, which monitors the cardiac activity for a certain period of time thanks to the usage of electrodes. It is recommended to dress in comfortable, soft and loose clothing.
